The California State University (CSU) awards honorary degrees only at the doctoral level unless the CSU Board of Trustees allows an exception. Since 1963, CSU campuses have awarded honorary degrees to 823 distinguished individuals through spring 2024. These recipients have demonstrated excellence in areas that benefit CSU campuses, the state, nation, world, and humanity. The CSU Board of Trustees gives the degrees in the name of the California State University and in the name of the campus.

CRITERIA AND ELIGIBILITY
The California State University Board of Trustees provide the criteria for awarding honorary degrees, limitations on eligibility, procedures for selecting honorary degree recipients, conferral of degrees, limits of degree authorization, and amending the honorary degree policy.
The board will consider no more than two nominations from each campus in an academic year. Board members and the chancellor may submit nominations during the same period, with a limit of one trustee nomination for conferral at each campus during an academic year.
